It’s By Striving that One Becomes a Striveman

“C’est en faisant n’importe quoi qu’on devient n’importe qui.”
-Rémi Gaillard

The quote above was popularized by Rémi Gaillard, a French YouTube sensation who specializes in pranks and other outrageous behavior recorded on hidden camera.

The quote appears at the end of each of his videos. Out of curiosity, I decided to research its meaning, never expecting to find inspiration from a guy who is essentially the French version of Jackass.

The commonly accepted meaning of “C’est en faisant n’importe quoi qu’on devient n’importe qui” is:

  • “It is in doing whatever that we can become whoever”; or
  • “It is by doing just anything that you become just anybody.”

The quote is a play on a French proverb, “C’est en forgeant qu’on devient forgeron,” which means, “It’s by forging that one becomes a blacksmith.”

In other words, what you do is what you become. If you do “just anything”—the common, typical, and ordinary—then you will become just another “anybody” or “any old person.” If, however, you strive for more and take the necessary actions, then you can become “whoever” you want.

And that’s really what Striveman is about. We want you to resist the typical life, pursue your goals, improve yourself, and become someone who you can be proud of. Your life trajectory can be altered, and the best time to start is now.
